I have always enjoyed Cherry Coca-Cola™, but I became a little obsessed with it when we visited Walt Disney World™ for the first time, in 2017 and again in 2019.
I had always wanted to go to Disney World when I was little, but my dads idea of a holiday was more cultural…
I’ve seen wild animals in Kenya; visited Victoria Peak in Hong Kong; had my hair braided on the beach in Bali; had a rather nasty looking beetle grab my big toe in whilst walking through Jemaa el-Fnaa, in Marrakesh; walked in a crater of Nisyros, an active volcano (Greece); watched iguanas in Puerto Vallarta and I’ve been inside the Great Pyramid of Giza.
These are just a handful of places I have seen, and I truly have been so lucky, but I digress. My travel adventures will come in another post. Back to Disney…
We stayed on property on both occasions, and because we were on one of the dining plans, we had one of the refillable mugs. There were lots of beverages to choose from, from the classic Coke to lemonades and ginger beers, but there was one that became my “holiday drink”. Cherry Coke™. Thank heavens for the refillable mug… I don’t think I could have afforded to pay for the amount that I must have drank on both trips!
One of the restaurants that we visited in Hollywood Studios™ is called the Hollywood and Vine. We were shown to our seats and the waitress talked us through the details… When we were ready, we could head up to the buffet, and help ourselves. There was no limit on the amount of food we could put on ours plates, and no limit to the amount of times we could go back up. She then asked if we would like anything to drink. Of course! Cherry Coke!
“I’m sorry, but we don’t have any Cherry Coke here”, she stated.
CRACK – my heart broke.
“But I can make one for you…”, she continued.
She took the rest of the drinks order, then walked away with a smile.
Whilst waiting for the drinks, we went up to the buffet… As suspected, because we could have anything on offer, Gning and Donut had practically loaded up their plates with chicken nuggets and the cutest cupcakes you’ve ever seen. Hubby and I opted for something a little more suitable for a main course, and decided that we would go and take a look at the desserts after we had our fill on the savoury items first.
When we returned to our table, the waitress had been waiting for me. She wanted me to try the cherry cola that she had made for me, so I obliged.
Oh. My. Gosh! It was like the real thing!
I had to ask her how she made it, and whether she would share the secret with me. She replied with a giggle that it was no secret. It was simply two ingredients… Coca-Cola and grenadine. She then continued, explaining that it was originally a cocktail called Roy Rogers! Honestly, I’d never heard of that before, but they say you always learn something new every day.
So without further ado, here’s the details!
- 230ml / 8oz Coca-Cola or Pepsi
- 30ml / 1oz Grenadine syrup
- Optional: maraschino cherry to finish (I call these plastic cherries)
- Optional: ice
- Put ice in to a glass
- Pour the Coca-Cola / Pepsi and Grenadine over the ice
- Add a maraschino cherry in the glass
